Crime: Murder in a Small Town by Michael Ace Smith takes place in a small town in Yorkshire, England. It must be scary to live in a small town where everyone knows everyone, no strangers have been observed passing through, and a murderer is on the loose. It must be someone known to the rest of the town’s inhabitants.

Melanie lived with her father; the two of them lived on his disability income and the little bit she made as a cashier. She rarely had time for a social life but this night she would go out with her friend, Daisy. Her friend met a guy and that was OK because Melanie would take the bus home where she would meet her dad. But Melanie missed the bus. Melanie didn’t return home. Her body was found a few days later.

Frankie worked at one of the town’s three pubs. She lived nearby with her mom and brothers. It was a short walk to the pub. But on this night there was snow and ice. She slipped, fell, and twisted her ankle. Luckily for Frankie, someone stopped to help. Unluckily for Frankie, the someone killed her. The body was found a few days later.

The next body to be found was not a town resident but a friend who was visiting and staying over with a town resident. Except for this girl, the constables investigating the cases had known the victims. All victims had been injected with a date rape drug. All had been conscious during the time they were tortured.

This is a whodunit with a surprise ending. Author Smith has done a great job building up the tension to an unexpected conclusion. I gave this short story five Amazon stars and want to point out that this is another good value read with a Kindle Unlimited subscription.
